The context of these instructions come in the backdrop of the false gods and idols that Israel learned about while in Egypt. God is helping Israel, and us, understand that when it comes to the gods we serve and worship, He has no worthy competition. He is infinitely greater and more valuable than they.

These last three commandments not only tell us what we are not to do but also help us understand who God wants us to be. Obedience to these commands are designed to produce fruit that enables us to become people who are generous, lovers of truth, and content in our hearts.

When the Red Sea closed on Pharaoh and his army, the Israelites burst into song to celebrate who God is and what God has done. Singing to the Lord was a proper response to a powerful God. As we explore this passage as God's people, let us examine if we are properly responding to who God is and what God has done.
